About WFNH: Our Founders

In 1998-1999, Molly Scheu and Barbara Zeckhausen traveled throughout New Hampshire talking with residents, asking whether they felt that the needs of women and girls were adequately met in the State. The concerns they encountered were many: a lack of childcare and elder care, at-risk teenagers and young adults, homelessness, abuse, low wages, lack of healthcare, and very little job training. They discovered that schools and non-profit organizations had their funding cut or eliminated. Government at all levels did not fill the need. Molly and Barb’s vision of change was realized when forty-two women and men became the Founders of WFNH.

Founders' Profiles

We have begun to collect profiles of the women and men who are our Founders. These are the people who believed enough in the idea of the Women’s Fund of New Hampshire to be the building blocks of our first endowment dollars and operating funds starting in 1998. A talented and experienced volunteer is contributing her time and expertise to make this project happen: Shirley Elder, a former reporter for The Washington Star and the Boston Globe’s New Hampshire Weekly. As the profiles of our Founders are completed we’ll be posting them here on our website.

*Susan McLane, noted above as one of the original 40 Founders of WFNH, passed away on Feb. 13, 2005, at the age of 75, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She ran for political office and won when less than a quarter of the members of legislature were women. As a member of the New Hampshire state government from 1969 to 1994, she was a leader in reforming the mental health care system in the state. She also advocated for welfare mothers, the environment, and dignity in dying. Click here to view the Concord Monitor about Susan McLane.
