Voices Against Violence

Survivors of violence want your listening ear. Survivors of domestic and sexual violence call our 24-hour crisis line for information and support. They want to talk with empathetic people who will listen, provide support, and give them hope. Do you have good listening and communication skills? You can make a difference by becoming a crisis line advocate. We offer volunteer training sessions twice a year, typically on weeknights and Saturdays. our comprehensive training qualifies volunteers to work directly with victim/survivors as required by law. Opportunities for continuing education are available frequently throughout the year. Past volunteers tell us the sessions have been informative, and that they teach skills that have been useful in other parts of their lives. For more information or to register for the next training, contact Jeannette Bilodeau at 536-3423 or email jeannettebvoices@yahoo.com.

The trainings are 34 hours required by the state, and we cover all aspects of domestic and sexual violence, talk about resources available to victims, how to work with victims and their children. We bring in personnel from the police departments, hospital, counseling centers, etc. so that trainees become familiar with each community sectors role in working with victims. After the training there are a variety of things volunteers can do. The largest area that volunteers help out with is our 24 hour crisis line where people can call and get information, simply talk about what's going on for them, and learn about ways to get help. In addition to the crisis line we are always looking for people to come into our shelter and do activities with the kids, which allows the moms to get some of their own things taken care of which is really essential. If volunteers are don't feel comfortable working directly with victims we are always in need of help with community outreach, and office work. For more information, call Amy at 536-3423.
